1) Earn a bachelor’s degree

  • The journey to becoming a CPA starts with earning your bachelor’s degree.
  • Earning a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university is the most crucial step to becoming a CPA. Several CPAs begin with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • A typical year of college earns you 30 credits. If the program is structured as a three-year undergraduate degree, it usually consists of six semesters, each carrying around 15 credits, bringing your total to 90 credits.
  • However, there is an exception. If you have completed your B. Com with first division from an NAAC A accredited university, you will be rewarded with an additional 30 credits, bringing your total to 120 credits.

2) Complete additional coursework

  • As we discussed in the above point, a bachelor’s degree would provide you with 90-120 credits, but you must earn 150 credits to become a licensed CPA.
  • To earn the remaining credit points, candidates can meet the 150-credit requirement by pursuing a master’s in accounting. Candidates can either pursue an M. Com or an MBA.
  • Similarly, a professional qualification such as CA/CS/CWA adds an additional 60+ credits to your existing portfolio.

3) Take the Uniform CPA Examination

  • After fulfilling your state’s educational requirements, you will then be qualified to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination.
  • This 16-hour examination includes several multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations, and essay questions.
  • The CPA examination examines your knowledge in the following core areas.
    • Auditing and Attestation (AUD)
    • Taxation and Regulation (REG)
    • Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR)
  • In addition, candidates must choose one of these three specialized discipline areas.
    • Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR)
    • Information Systems and Control (ISC)
    • Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP)
  • The AICPA conducts the CPA exam with inputs from the state boards of accountancy and NASBA (National Association of State Boards of Accountancy).
  • All the CPAs are required to pass this examination to become licensed. Some jurisdictions may also require CPAs to complete the Ethics examination.

4) Gain Work Experience
